Senate Rejects Priority Status for Roads Bill (by SC FOR Alliance)
Last week, the SC Senate rejected a motion to place the roads bill on priority status. However, negotiations continue regarding a bipartisan roads bill compromise and Senators on both sides of the aisle indicate that progress is being made.
The South Carolina State Senate failed to make a roads plan a legislative priority by a vote of (Y)23 – (N)18. The motion to set the bill for special order did not receive the necessary two-thirds vote and the bill remains on hold.
The following Senators voted against the motion to set the bill for special order. We encourage you to contact these Senators -- state your support for the road funding legislation and let them know it is not acceptable to come home this year without passing a plan to fix our roads.
Senators Voting NO:
If you would prefer to send a message online click HERE.
The House of Representatives has stepped up every year to pass a plan to fix our roads and bridges. The proposal under consideration in the Senate would increase the state's gas tax by 12 cents a gallon and other fees, raising about $800 million a year to repair our crumbling infrastructure.
The cost of continued inaction is high, with crumbling roads taking South Carolinian's:
South Carolina motorists lose over 18 million hours every year sitting in traffic.
Each year, South Carolinians pay a "hidden tax" of over $1,300 in car wear & tear and effort expended.
South Carolina’s roads are the deadliest in the nation with over 950 deaths occurring annually.
If we work together, we can ensure that the Senate passes a bi-partisan, compromise road plan this year.
This is a critical moment in the fight to fix South Carolina's crumbling roads and bridges, and we need your help to ensure that the roads bill is set for debate.
