Masters, Mates & Pilots (MM&P)
A brief summary of your services will tell us…
Masters, Mates & Pilots (MM&P) is a maritime labor union that represents thousands of highly trained professional mariners. It is the marine affiliate of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA).
MM&P members are: licensed deck officers on U.S.-flag vessels sailing offshore, on the inland waters and Great Lakes, on civilian-crewed ships in the government fleet and aboard state ferries in Washington and Alaska; state-licensed pilots; professional mariners crewing dredges, tug, ferry and harbor tour vessels in New York Harbor, throughout the Northeast and on the West Coast.
What might surprise me about Masters, Mates & Pilots?
MM&P has two state-of-the-art training facilities: the Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies outside of Baltimore, Md., and the Pacific Maritime Institute in Seattle. Both have advanced simulation systems that are used for training by companies worldwide.
MM&P also operates a hotel, a restaurant and a busy conference center located five minutes from BWI Airport.
How do you attract and retain a dedicated workforce that is able to support all of your customers’ needs?
MM&P’s mission is to protect and advance the professional and economic status of our members through representation, collective bargaining, organizing and legislative and political activity. This work is supported by a cadre of dedicated professionals at MM&P headquarters, offices in Charleston and in a number of other port cities. Staffers strive to meet the expectations of union members and to work collegially with employers. They have a strong work ethic, identify with MM&P’s mission and seek ways to improve work processes to benefit the community as a whole. The union recognizes and rewards individual achievement, which in turn promotes staff loyalty and longevity. It is not unusual for staffers to remain with the union for their entire careers.
What are some of Masters, Mates & Pilots proudest accomplishments?
Since it was founded in 1887, MM&P has been at the forefront of efforts to strengthen the American maritime industry. It has a legislative affiliate in Washington, D.C., that works alongside other maritime labor unions and shipping companies to educate legislators and regulators about the importance of our industry to America’s national defense, homeland security and economic well being. Professionalism, safety, protection of the environment and the flow of commerce are our watchwords. We are proud of our work on behalf of seagoing professionals and of our partnership with government and industry to advance the domestic and international interests of the United States.
