On August 21st, 2017, the Charleston area will experience a total solar eclipse.
Charleston County officials expect unusually high concentrations of recreational and commercial boating traffic within the Charleston Harbor area, as far north as McClellanville, SC, and as far south as Beaufort, SC.
There will be an increased number of Coast Guard and local authorities patrolling the harbor and affected areas. Additionally, several draw bridge schedules are modified to assist with the influx of vehicle traffic. (please refer to MSIB 25-17). The Coast Guard and local authorities are reaching out to the public to provide notices of boating safety and requirements. Mariners are urged to be watchful and plan transits accordingly to avoid unnecessary disruptions.
Details related to time specific tracking of the solar eclipse are found on NASA's website at http://www.weather.gov/chs/eclipse
For safety concerns, please contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM channel 16.
