The North Atlantic right whale migration and calving season is beginning for the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast U.S.
Compliance Guide for Right Whale Ship Strike Reduction Rule (50 CFR 224.105)
The Mid-Atlantic Seasonal Management Area (Block Island, NY to south of Savannah, GA) begins tomorrow, November 1. The associated speed restriction of 10 knots for vessels greater than 65 feet in overall length will remain in effect through April 30, 2018.
The Southeast U.S. Seasonal Management Area (which includes the ports of Brunswick, Fernandina, and Jacksonville) ship speed restrictions will become effective on November 15 and will remain in place through April 15, 2018.
The North Atlantic right whale population has suffered from an extraordinary number of deaths in 2017 and therefore NOAA Fisheries greatly appreciates your continued efforts to protect this endangered species.
