Renfinity’s Secure Grid™ - Ports and Cybersecurity

Where security controls are weak, criminals will quickly take advantage. According to a new report provided to InsideSources, the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIIO) and the National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) are in the middle of a study on cyber risks in the maritime industry, spanning February 2018 to August 2019, which will be presented to the Director of National Intelligence and the National Security Council.

Cybersecurity is a serious issue for maritime industries. Major ocean carriers like Maersk and COSCO and ports like the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of San Diego suffered severe cyber attacks over the last few years, temporarily crippling their supply chains and, in some cases, bringing the flow of goods to a halt. In order for the maritime industry to really crack down on cybercrime, every link of the supply chain must augment its cybersecurity.

One of the biggest cyber risks within the maritime supply chain are third-party vendors, like contractors and software providers. It is important that the entire maritime supply chain should be up to date on cyber risks and cybersecurity initiatives. These initiatives include:

• Focus on coordinating responsibilities and Information-sharing strategies.

• Secure single-factor PIN electronic release systems or ‘ERSs’

• Monitor high value, untraceable commodities containers

• Secure EDIFACT messaging system

• Secure serial data on vessel networks

• Ensure third-party vendors are cybersecure

Main Objectives:

Drive terminal performance, contribute to the continuous improvements and cost savings by implementing defined measures and actions required during the vessel call in Hamburg.
Ensures that a chosen and contracted supplier fulfills his/her duties and that subcontracts are corresponding with the frame contract.
Direct communication with terminal management to define and apply corrective actions immediately and ensure timely feedback of outcome and lessons learned to Area / Regional Operations Management.

Monitor the implementation of improvement measures during pre- and after berthing and during terminal operations:

Ensure vessel arrival and berthing processes are within target duration.
Ensure crane availability and performance align with expectation (stowage provided).
Discuss deviations and quick fixes with Terminal (real-time).
Constantly seek to identify further improvement measures and ensure transfer of ideas to Regional Operations Management.

Conduct regular reviews of overall action plans from terminal partnering projects:

Discuss and implement improvement measures with Terminal Management based on feedback from Vessel Command/ Planner.
Ensure alignment of definition and implementation of corrective measures with terminal operations.
Provide feedback from frequent interaction to Regional Operations Management.
Ensure that measures with internal responsibility is being transferred within the organization.

Identify opportunities for schedule/vessel space optimization

Review and decide on loading of additional units in direct alignment with terminals and internal stakeholders (e.g. slot control, vessel planner).

Requirements and Qualifications:

Knowledge:

Good understanding of the shipment processes.
Knowledge in terminal/ port operations essential. Awareness of regional factors for ship and port calls. (Tidal conditions, encounter regulations, wind and weather dependencies, currents, port restrictions from authorities, max. draught in the port and on the river).
Ability to drive efficiency in port calls.
Effective communication, co-ordination and conflict management skills.
Ability to link and coordinate business related developments through the organization.
Advanced English skills in writing and speaking.
Good analytical skills.
Advanced PC knowledge (QlikView, Excel).

Experience:

Reporting of management related information
Cost Control background is eligible
Experience in direct contact with customers and/ or suppliers, service partner
Experience in buying, negotiation and/or contracting activities

Joint Base Charleston will be conducting explosive operations at Wharf Alfa on the Cooper River above Goose Creek beginning on August 16, 2019 through August 30, 2019. Mariners are advised a Naval Vessel Protection Zone exists around all U.S. Naval Vessels greater than 100 feet in length overall at all times in the navigable waters of the United States. Mariners are urged to use caution while transiting the area.

A joint public safety training exercise will be conducted throughout Charleston Harbor from Monday, August 5 to Wednesday, August 7, 2019. The purpose of the training exercise will be to emphasize local coordination, waterborne rescue, and tactical waterborne deployment/recovery. Expect local assets, including both helicopter and small boat, to be in the following areas and time:

Monday, August 5 from 1300 - 1700: Cooper River in between Laurel Island and the West of Drum Island.

Tuesday, August 6 from 1300 - 1700: Stono River in vicinity of James Island County Park and South Edisto River in vicinity of ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge.

Tuesday, August 6 from 2000 - 2300: South Edisto River in vicinity of ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge and Stono River in vicinity of Limehouse Bridge.

Wednesday, August 7 from 1000 - 1400: Cooper River in between Drum Island and Daniel Island.

This training will not impede local maritime traffic and all local Law Enforcement/Response agencies have been briefed. Involved training exercise assets will be monitoring channel 16.
